The Gathering did something last night that we haven’t done in a while – we gathered! It was a blast. Sure, it was a little weird, being in masks and scattered all across the parking lot. But being together was such an encouragement to me. I loved standing on the stage and looking out at people’s faces instead of seeing an empty room with just a camera staring back at me. I want to say a big thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the night happen.
This weekend, I’m excited to be kicking off a new sermon series called Be Yourself. I have a quote by Oscar Wilde hanging at home that reads “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” It seems like such a simple idea, but it is absolutely the truth. As we move through life the pressure to be something other than ourselves grows and grows. We are constantly told who we should be. We compare ourselves to others, conform to fit in, and project only the best parts of who we are.
All of this keeps us from our true identity. The good news of Jesus is that we are known, forgiven, and loved without needing to be or do anything. As we stop pretending and begin to love ourselves as God loves us, we understand who God created us to be and what God has uniquely gifted us to do. So, for the next few weeks we will explore the ways we distort and discover our true identity. Check out the promo video for the series and be sure to share it with a friend.
For any of you that have never been to NEXT – this is your chance. Tuesday night, June 30th at 7pm I will be hosting NEXt at the McCausland site. It is a time for me to get to know you, share a bit more about The Gathering, and answer your questions. This will be a hybrid live/online event. So if you have been coming to The Gathering and are ready to learn a bit more about the church, please register to join me either in person or online right here.
This week I will be hosting a virtual welcome event for our two new pastors! Wednesday night, July 1st at 7:00 pm, we will be live on Facebook, Youtube, and The Gathering Online talking with Pastors Charity Goodwin and Adam Baker. You’ll have the chance to learn more about Charity and Adam, say hello, and ask questions. Please tune in to welcome them both to The Gathering.
It may seem like it has been forever since we last gathered together in person on a Sunday, but I am more convinced than ever that the church never closed. Instead, we have shifted. When you meet with your CoreGroup, serve those in need, give generously, and pray for your community, you are being the church.
Keep being the church out there, and I look forward to seeing you online this Sunday.
P.S. As we continue to plan for returning to in-person ministry, we want your input. It would be a big help to us if you could take a few minutes to fill out this short survey.
