Title: Living in God's Harmony is Glorious

Scripture:

Isaiah 11:9-10
9 They won’t harm or destroy anywhere on my holy mountain.
The earth will surely be filled with the knowledge of the Lord,
just as the water covers the sea.
A signal to the peoples

10 On that day, the root of Jesse will stand as a signal to the peoples. The nations will seek him out, and his dwelling will be glorious.

My Reflection

Living in harmony might feel like an impossible task with our current political climate and what feels like everyone, everywhere, fighting all the time. Taking it down smaller, just into our own personal lives, harmony can feel like a distant pleasant thought. It is the holiday season, which escalates emotions, expectations, and to-do lists. I think most of us in America feel stretched thin. Living in harmony in the world sounds wonderful, but at home, I have teenagers not getting along, a crisis in my extended family, and miscommunication between my wife and me. How do I find harmony when I can hardly find a moment’s peace?

There is comfort in knowing that when these ancient texts were written, the idea of harmony and peace was just as preposterous as it was when Jesus arrived as a baby on earth. The world has always and will always be full of strife. So, what is it we are called to do? I don’t believe we are to wait for harmony to arrive on the scene. I also don’t think we are to wait for one person or even one deity to show up and create peace. I believe we are called to usher in harmony one small act at a time. To bring harmony to others doesn’t need to cost us a great deal or even come from a grand gesture. This holiday season, you can grant someone peace by offering to take their shopping cart back for them. You can hold the door and offer a smile. Buy the coffee for the person behind you. You can sit with your friend, spouse, or child and let them talk about what’s troubling them, and not offer trite antidotes, but a hug. When we offer peace to others, they are able to pass it on to someone else. One small act can create much larger waves outside of ourselves.

I encourage you to go and pass a moment of harmony on to someone else today.

My Prayer:

Creator, I ask for you to grant me peace of spirit today. I invite you to help me see those who need peace and a way for me to offer it to them. Help me to know ways in which I can create harmony in my home, in my workplace, and in public spaces I enter today. Give me the courage to pass on peace to others. I see and know that when I share peace, I feel it too. Amen.

Much like the message to plant peace, I appreciate the reminder that we can bring peace to the spaces we enter and the people we encounter.
