Let It Rip

Scripture:

Perfect love drives out fear. (1 John 4:18)

Reflection:

The Moral Influence perspective reminds us that transformation is drawn out by love, not fear. When we trust that God’s love is steadfast and unconditional, we are freed from trying to prove ourselves, hiding our imperfections, or performing to earn approval. Love casts out fear, reshapes our hearts, and allows us to reflect God’s grace in how we relate to others.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I notice this most clearly when I play pickleball. I play my best when I let it rip. I stop doubting shots. I stop overthinking. I stop worrying about who might be watching. Even in the face of errors, I am confident. I just accept that what’s about to happen is as good as I have to offer, and I know that just by going for it and playing all out, I am at my best.

Releasing fear and doubt in my worthiness of God’s love works the same way. It frees me to be the love of God in the world. It gives me eyes to see others as God sees me—not with condemnation, but with compassion. I begin to live boldly, not cautiously, and act out of gratitude rather than anxiety.

When fear is released, love flows freely through us, and our best selves emerge—not by perfection, but by daring to fully participate in God’s work of restoration and grace.

Prayer:

God, free me from fear, doubt, and the need to perform. Teach me to live fully in your love, confident even when I stumble. Give me eyes to see others as you see me, with compassion and grace. May my words, actions, and presence reflect your love freely, boldly, and without hesitation. Amen.

Reflection Question:

Where am I holding back because I doubt my worthiness of God’s love?
