Title: All for the Greater Glory of God

Scripture:

“Bless the Lord God, the God of Israel, the only one who does wondrous things!
Bless God’s glorious name forever; let his glory fill all the earth!  Amen! and Amen!” - Psalm 72: 18-19

My Reflection

Reading these two verses at the end of Psalm 72 can be somewhat overwhelming, but so exhilarating.  In two sentences, we are reminded of the all-encompassing and consuming nature of God’s glory and the passionate love, blessing, and peace this glory brings to the earth every day. We, as part of God’s creation, are called to be a part of letting God’s “glory fill the earth”.  Heady right?

The question is, how do we bring about the glory of God in our daily lives?  St. Ignatius of Loyola provides an interesting answer to this question through the “Principle and Foundation” of his Spiritual Exercises.  According to Ignatian Spirituality, God creates out of love.  All of creation is a gift whose purpose is to bring about God’s glory.  Thus, every part of our lives, every action we take, everything we say, is to bring about the greater glory of God on earth.

As we enter the midpoint of Advent, and eagerly await God’s incarnation on earth through the birth of Jesus, we reflect and remember that we too are an incarnation of God’s glory through our very creation.  We are called to live lives that only praise, revere, and serve God.  When we live out this purpose, we are fully alive and manifest God’s glory, love, and peace on earth.

My Prayer:

God, I come to you in gratitude today and always.  I recognize my purpose is to bring about your glory, love and peace to the earth.  Help me to remember this purpose as I go through my daily life, making you its center.  All I am is because of you and your son, Jesus.  May I always be a manifestation of your love and glory.  Make me your instrument.  I surrender to your will.   Amen

Reflection Question:

  • How does God’s glory manifest through my daily actions and interactions with others?
