How Do We Really Bridge the Generation Gap? // M-Note 8.2.2025

Have you ever found yourself wondering, “Why don’t they get it?”—whether “they” are your parents, your kids, your coworkers, or the people sitting across the aisle at church?

You're not alone.

More and more, it feels like the generations are speaking different languages. One group laments that, "nobody goes to church anymore," while another wonders if the church even cares about the questions they’re asking. Teenagers can feel dismissed; young adults sense they don’t belong; older generations can feel confused or left behind as things change. We often end up talking past one another instead of with each other.

But what if the differences aren’t a problem to solve—but a gift to embrace?

The church is meant to be one of the few places where all generations gather, learn from one another, and grow together. In a world increasingly divided by age, culture, and communication style, we believe the Church is uniquely positioned to model a different way: one of mutual respect, listening, and shared faith.

That’s what our new series—Boomers to Zoomers: Bridging the Generation Gap—is all about. Over four weeks, we’ll explore what each generation has to offer the church, and what we all can learn about faith, wisdom, and life from one another. Each week we’ll focus on a different age group—from kids and teens, to young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults—looking at how God is working in and through each of us.

The new series begins August 10th but to get ready, I want to hear from YOU! We’ve created a short, anonymous survey where you can reflect on your own generation, your experience in the church, and what you wish others understood about you. It’s a fun and meaningful way to contribute to the conversation—and maybe learn something along the way.

Take the survey here.

Let’s build a church where every generation belongs—and where no one gets left out of the conversation. This is going to be a really fun series and a perfect one to invite someone new to check out. I hope you will bring a friend or neighbor along with you.

Peace,

Matt

P.S. I am leading a trip to Egypt in February of 2026 to retrace the steps of Moses, see the sites, and reflect on our faith. It is going to be an incredible trip and there are still spots left. The trip is open to anyone and I would love for you to consider it. if you are feeling the nudge, or just want to learn more, reach out to me. You can find out all the details of the trip here. We hope to have a group of about 40 people from The Gathering going, and I would love for you to be a part of it.
