A Birth Story - Advent Devotional Day 26

Scripture
"10 But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.'” - Luke 2:10-12

Reflection
In March of 2023, I was blessed to be part of my son’s birth at my family’s home. To be honest, I could have been scared and overwhelmed, but the birth of my baby was something so amazing that it was worth overcoming fear.

For the shepherds, the sight of the angel was so awesome and terrifying, but the news he came to deliver was worth overcoming fear.

“Don’t be afraid!”

While our older daughter Genevieve held hands with her mom, and the midwives gathered around the bed at 6:23 AM, a miracle happened. Our child, Elio Immanuel DiCenzo, was born healthy and strong, and our home became a place of profound joy and wonder. The girls stayed home from school to relish in the glow of their newborn baby brother.

“Look!”

Sometimes a blessing can be frightening because God’s holiness, power and  presence are so impressive! The sight of an angel, the arrival of new life as it bursts forth onto this planet. God’s wonderous works can be surprising!  God is with us, orchestrating magnificence which will bring us the greatest joy, joy unspeakable, if we heed those words, “Don’t be afraid! Look!”

The angel came to bring good news! The savior was born! The birth of my own son was so exciting for our family. He was quietly contained and then suddenly we were able to witness his arrival firsthand. If my own little baby boy brought hope, excitement and renewal to my personal existence, how much more does the birth of God’s own son - our savior, the messiah, come to earth?

He will cause great joy for ALL people, throughout all of time.

Prayer
In this season of celebration and reflection, we lift our hearts to you and pray for your continued guidance and blessings. Help us to trust in your promise of salvation, letting go of fear and embracing the joy that Christ brings.  As we gather with loved ones to celebrate the birth of Jesus, may we also celebrate the miracle of new life and the wonder of your love. We offer this prayer in gratitude for your grace and love. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
