Title: Christ: The Peaceful King
Scripture: Psalm 72:1-7
My Reflection
Psalm 72 is a plea to God by the writer of the psalm for God to give right judgment to the king and righteousness to the king’s son so that there may finally be peace to the people and that those who cry out may finally receive justice. The language of kingship may feel difficult for us in this time and in this country. The American Revolutionary War was fought just so that we would not have to live under a king.
The king described in Psalm 72 is one that is worthy of kingship. This is not a king that rules with an iron fist nor one that demands that his subjects bend the knee in subjugation. No, this king is one of peace, righteousness, and justice. This Psalm is used in the Christian community to point to a king that was to come and who was to rule over his people in righteousness.
For us, this king is Jesus who was born humbly in a manger, yet he is the “Prince of Peace” as stated in Isaiah 9:6. Jesus is the one who is “anointed to bring good news to the poor”, “proclaim release to the captives”, and to “let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18-19). This sounds much like the king in our Psalm today, no? Jesus is the one who tells us to not be afraid, that peace is with us (John 14:27), and that he will be with us always to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).
Christ is with us always, like the king who lives “as long as the sun, as long as the moon, generation to generation” from today’s scripture reading. Christ does not come into the world to rule with force, but to be our comfort. I invite you friends to slow down this season, to pause, and rest in stillness. May we look to Christ, the peaceful king, to be our good news, the peace of our hearts, and to give us the courage to be that peace in our world.

My Prayer:
My sweet Lord, thank you for your peace that goes beyond all understanding. As the days darken and the light fades in the evening I pray that we may rest in your stillness and delight in your silence. Thank you for sending us a king, born humbly in a manger, so lowly and meek, who never fails us and who gives us peace. May we be your peace in the world, for our families, our friends, and for each other. I pray this through Jesus Christ, our Prince of Peace. Amen.
