Quote:
“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Reflection:
We are called to live together. The story of God’s people is a story of community, of people being drawn together. Yet, following the abolition of slavery, whites in power enacted Jim Crow laws to systematically create unequal playing fields for black and white Americans. White churches reinforced the idol of white supremacy by resisting and even preventing integration of their faith communities.
Christ calls us to pray together, serve together, do life together. To be, in the words of Josiah Royce, a “Beloved Community”. We have to learn to rely on one another. We need help and we need to offer help to our neighbors. What does your group of friends look like? Do you spend a lot of time with people who look or speak differently than you? Do you seek diversity within your circles? Do you long for the vision of Beloved Community shared by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? If so, how are you working to make that vision a reality?
