CoreGroup Guide | Much Given - Part 3

CoreGroup Guide | Much Given. Much Expected. – Part 3
Written by Denee Bowers and Melissa Ross

Welcome

The overarching story of the Bible is one of a generous God. God is not one to withhold or skimp on taking care of us. As we grow in our faith, that same generosity is meant to become a defining feature of our lives. We weren’t designed to keep everything we have for ourselves. Generosity is a path to an abundant life with God. So, this week, we will explore the ways we can become more generous in real, tangible ways.

Opening Prayer

Holy God,
Thank you for another opportunity to gather. As we continue to consider giving, we ask that you would open our hearts to your generosity toward us. Remind us of all the gifts you have given us. May our conversation draw us closer to you and shape us into people who give joyfully and with hearts full of gratitude. Amen.

Ice Breaker

Halloween is almost here, but there’s still time for costume planning! What is your favorite Halloween costume you have ever worn?

The Head

One of the first characters we meet in the Bible is a man named Abram (later known as Abraham). Abram and his wife Sarai are unable to have children, which is a big deal in their world. That’s about all we know about Abram and Sarai when God makes a big promise to them in this week’s scripture. The promise is specific to them, but the way they are meant to use their  blessing for the good of others applies to us today.

Genesis 12:1-3

The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your land, your family, and your father’s household for the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and will bless you. I will make your name respected, and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you,
    those who curse you I will curse;
all the families of the earth
will be blessed because of you.”

  • What are the key things that God asks Abram to do in these verses?
  • How does this passage demonstrate God’s care for each individual and the world?

In the New Testament, Jesus continues to build up the theme of sharing blessings that we see in Abram’s story, here in a teaching to his disciples and as quoted by Paul in the book of Acts.

Matthew 16:24-25

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

  • This is a loaded statement! How would you paraphrase the words of Jesus in your own words?
  • Why do you think Jesus highlights giving and sacrifice over receiving and self-seeking behavior?

Acts 20.35b

In this way we remember the Lord Jesus’ words: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

  • How do you understand the use of the word ‘more’ in this verse?
  • In what ways did Jesus live out these words through his actions?

The Heart

Jesus says it is better to give than receive, but that doesn’t mean that giving is easy. Opening up to the idea that our blessings are meant to be shared, and trusting that God will provide, are not one time decisions. We have to keep circling back, being reminded, and renewing our commitment to a life of generosity.

  • Do you consider yourself a blessed person? What helps you to recognize your blessings?
  • When have you experienced the joy or blessing of giving — time, money or encouragement?
  • How do you cultivate a spirit of generosity that actively looks for opportunities to give?

The Hands

Once we commit to generosity we have to be willing to look for opportunities and take action when the time is right. It might even require some planning beforehand. You don’t have to start talking numbers or break out your spreadsheets (although you’re welcome to if you are that comfortable with your group!), but use this group as a place to workshop what action you plan to take with the blessings you’ve been given.

  • What roadblocks come up for you when you think about starting or increasing a practice of generosity?
  • What practical changes do you need to make in order to be able to start or increase a practice of generosity?
  • What is one small act of generosity you could do for someone else this week?

Closing Prayer

Gracious God,
Thank you for the time we’ve shared and the ways it has brought us together. Help us carry this message beyond our discussion – into our homes, relationships, and daily lives. Let our generosity be a reflection of you, showing others the love and compassion that we have experienced. We ask for your strength as we grow into more generous followers of Christ. Amen.

Going Deeper

The companion guide for this series includes a list from author Joshua Becker of nine ways generous people see the world differently:

  1. They recognize the resource pie is not finite.
  2. They know that generosity leads to greater happiness.
  3. They find success in helping others succeed.
  4. They believe changing even one life is worthwhile.
  5. They trust others.
  6. They dream big dreams for their money.
  7. They see more resources to give than money.
  8. They fully embrace the reality that life is short.
  9. They are content to live with less.

  • Which of these mindsets do you naturally possess? Which are more challenging for you?
  • Which one of these statements will you make your focus for the next week?
