In collaboration with the YWCA, The Gathering is excited to host a Witnessing Whiteness (WW) group this fall.
Since 2011, the YWCA has been organizing and leading WW groups as part of its mission to eliminate racism. WW groups are for adults (18 and over) who identify as white to come together to uncover and explore the impact of our white racial identity and the operation of racism in our lives and communities.
The work of WW groups draws on the book Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It (2nd edition) by Shelly Tochluk, along with processes for group discussions, experiential activities, and personal reflection.
We will learn the history of the invention of whiteness, the myth of white superiority, and the operation of white supremacy in us and the US. We are able to confront our personal biases within a supportive setting. Finally, we learn how to interrupt racism and act as agents of change.
The WW approach is designed to “build knowledge, skills, capacities and communities that support anti-racism practices” (Tochluk), which result in verifiable changes in attitudes and behavior. Nearly 3000 people in the St. Louis metro area have participated in the program.
Dates & Structure
A team of three YWCA trained facilitators will guide the group through ten two-hour sessions over approximately 16 weeks.
The group will meet virtually via Zoom on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm on the following dates:
September 1, 15, & 29
October 13 & 27
November 10 & 17
December 1 & 8
It is understood that some participants will likely miss one or two sessions, but it is important to commit to the group process and attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions. If you are not able to do so, we ask that you wait for another group that better accommodates your schedule.
Each participant is asked to provide their own copy of the book, which you can purchase locally at a discounted rate. Other than that, there are no costs to participate.
If you would like to participate, but the cost of the book or the technology required for the virtual meetings prevents you from doing so, please let me know, and I will reach out to discuss options.
Our group size is limited to 18, and participants will be added in the order in which their registration is received. You will receive confirmation no later than July 15.
Can’t join our group?
If you would like to participate, but cannot attend this time, you can sign up to be added to the waitlist for one of the WW community groups. Please contact Cyndie Jones at firstname.lastname@example.org.
