Day 12

God's Timing

Day 12
Thursday, December 9

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

2 Peter 3:8-9

Reflection
I don’t know if Peter was a parent, but his commentary on the passing of time captures parenting perfectly: some days with my kids feel like a thousand years (potty-training a three year old at home on lockdown during a pandemic, for example), yes some seasons seem to fly by (how is it that my oldest has just one year of elementary school left???). I wonder if God feels the same way about our lives? Peter reminds us that God’s sense of time is much different from our own. We may keep muttering the same prayer over-and-over, only to feel like God will never answer us. But, God’s patience can’t be measured in days, weeks, months, or even years as we know them. God keeps his promises, but in God’s own time.

Prayer
God, thank you for being patient with us and for always keeping your promises. Forgive us when we are impatient and are slow to recognize your faithfulness. Help us to be more patient and trust that you are always at work in our lives. Amen.
